The Drakensberg - Soul of the Zulu Kingdom
| |||||
Nottingham RoadColonial authorities built Fort Nottingham in 1856 its garrison of appropriately-named First Sherwood Foresters protecting settler- farmers against Bushmen stock raids. The move proved largely ineffectual until the 1869 Reprisal launched from the fort turned the frontier war in the whites' favour. Nottingham Road had also made headlines in 1866, when enterprising colonists drove a flock of sheep into the area all the way from the Cape Colony.
Attention was again focussed on the area in 1884 with the arrival of trout, an event commemorated in the Trout Bungalow grounds near Nottingham Road. The memorial inscription there reads: Erected to the memory of John Clark Parker by lovers of the Gentle Art of Trout Fishing. By his untiring efforts, trout were first introduced into Natal circa A.D. 1884; thereby giving much pleasure to many persons. Historical & Cultural Attractions
